Fifty-five Windows Palace was built by King Yaksha Malla in 1420 AD. Its present look was given by King Bhupatindra Malla. It has three storeys with finely carved window and doors. The walls of first floor are full of extraordinarily beautiful murals depicting scene from Mahabharata, the great Hindu epic. The central portraits are that of the cosmic manifestation of Shiva, multi-head, multi-armed and embracing his consort Shakti. The upper floor has the hall that features the 55 arcade windows. This part of the palace was severely damaged by the earthquake of 1934, but later it was renovated by the Ranas. The earthquake of 1988 August, further damaged the palace of Fifty-five Windows. Unfortunately the most serious damage was to the main room of second floor which house fine 18th century paintings in the Rajasthani style depicting scenes from the life of Lord Krishna.
